Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ hands-on

Introduction

After a month of what seemed like never ending barrage of leaks, Samsung has finally (and officially) announced its Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. This marks the company's first major smartphone release since the sad demise of the Galaxy Note7 last fall, which prompted the company to implement a new 8-point battery safety check to the S8 and all future devices.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 is Samsung's first major design change since the Samsung Galaxy S6, when Samsung went with premium materials like metal and glass to construct a beautiful device. And beautiful these devices are. Both feature curved edges on both sides so there is no longer an 'edge'-specific model. The S8+ otherwise has the same features and specs at the S8 except for a larger display and battery.
The display is the hallmark of the two phones - tall and narrow, pixel-rich and covering as much of the phones as possible. The aspect ratio is the odd bit here, though we've been prepped by the LG G6's 18:9 already - Samsung's panels are in an even more unorthodox 18.5:9 ratio. Super AMOLEDs, the two, naturally.
Samsung is one of the first, if not the first, to launch with the latest Snapdragon 835 chipset. Rumors suggested there will also be an Exynos version of the devices but so far we haven't seen that one announced.
The camera sensor for the S8 duo appears to come from the S7 and Note7, but with promised tweaks in processing (Pixel-like image stacking) the camera should be even better. And we're digging the bump in front camera resolution - it was high time Samsung decommissioned those 5MP selfie shooters.

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ at a glance

  • Body: Polished aluminum frame, Gorilla Glass 5 front and back; IP68 certified for water and dust resistance. Arctic Silver, Orchid Grey, Black Sky, Maple Gold, and Coral Blue color schemes.
  • Display: 5.8"/6.2" Super AMOLED, 2,960x1440px resolution, 18.5:9 (2.06:1) aspect ratio, 571/529ppi; HDR 10 compliant (no Dolby Vision).
  • Rear camera:12MP, f/1.7 aperture, dual pixel phase detection autofocus, OIS; multi-shot image stacking; 2160p/30fps video recording.
  • Front camera: 8MP, f/1.7 aperture, autofocus; 1080p/30fps video recording.
  • OS/Software: Android 7.0 Nougat; Samsung Grace UX; Bixby virtual assistant; Smart Connect, Smart Connect Home
  • Chipsets: Qualcomm Snapdragon 835: octa-core CPU (4xKryo 280 + 4xCortex-A53), Adreno 540 GPU. Exynos 8895: octa-core CPU (4x2nd-gen Mongoose + 4xCortex-A53), Mali-G71 GPU.
  • Memory: 4GB of RAM (6GB option for some markets, probably later down the line); 64GB storage; microSD slot for cards up to 256GB, UFS cards support.
  • Battery: 3,000mAh/3,500mAh Li-Po (sealed); Adaptive Fast Charging (same as S7); QuickCharge 2.0 support; WPC&PMA wireless charging.
  • Connectivity: Single-SIM, Dual-SIM available in certain markets; LTE-A, 4-Band carrier aggregation, Cat.16/13 (1Gbps/150Mbps); USB Type-C (v3.1); Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac; GPS, Beidou, Galileo; NFC; Bluetooth 5.0.
  • Misc: Fingerprint reader; iris recognition/face recognition; single speaker on the bottom; 3.5mm jack; bundled AKG headphones.
Samsung is also big on iris recognition, though it could have used a better ambassador for it than the Note 7. It is what is. Let's hope it's good enough for us to stop kvetching about that unconventionally placed fingerprint sensor.
A few other check boxes in the specsheet sure won't leave us complaining - the IP68 rating (should be mandatory on flagships, really), 3.5mm headphone jack (let's not go there again), and USB-C port (USB-C on all the things, already). AKG headphones also sound nice. Having them in the box, that is, we haven't actually heard them play.
We got to spend a few hours in a room with a few Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ near-final units - the perks of the job. What good are those initial impressions if we don't share them with you?

Survey showed 12 out of 24 Note7 owners switched to iPhone

Research firm IDC surveyed 1,082 U.S. customers of the Note7 through on online survey on October 17 and 18, just a few days after the phone maker decided to permanently discontinuethe productivity-focused phablet.
Of the 1,082 U.S. consumers, 507 were current Samsung owners, 347 were past Samsung users, 228 of which have never owned a Samsung device. Only 24 of the customers surveyed were owners, both past and present, of the Note7.
Key findings from the surveys show that half of the Note7 customers (12 out of 24) said they have or “will choose” an iPhone to replace their Samsung purchase. 17% of the surveyed customers said they would choose another Samsung. And most of them said they will return their phones physically to a carrier store.
The recall doesn’t appear to negatively affect Samsung’s brand, as most of the surveyed consumers said the recall wouldn’t affect future buying decisions for other non-smartphone appliances and products from Samsung.
“Although the recall may have an adverse impact on the brand in the short term, the truth is that Samsung remains the clear market leader in the worldwide smartphone market.” says Anthony Scarsella, research manager of mobile phones at IDC, “Moving forward, Samsung will need to put the Note7 to rest as quickly as possible to focus all efforts on producing a stellar Galaxy S8 come next spring.”

Huawei outs another Mate 9 teaser, focuses on battery

Xiaomi caused a lot of excitement with the Mi Note 2 and Mi Mix announcements, but Huawei is yet to make its next move. Of course, we are talking about the Huawei Mate 9, which will be unveiled on November 3.

Taking that into consideration, it should come as no surprise that the Chinese OEM is currently at the top on its teaser game. Today brings another bit of early info. According to the short video, the Mate 9 will come with exceptional battery life.

All the hints also seem to point toward some new and better fast charging technology. Perhaps Smart Power 5.0? As for other specs, it appears the Mate 9 will come in the two previously mentioned main varieties. The top-tier Pro is said to feature a 5.9-inch, curved QHD display.

In contrast, the regular flat one will likely be stuck with a FullHD panel. Other alleged specs include a Kirin 960 chipset, 4GB or 6GB of RAM, plus 64GB, 128GB or 256GB of storage. Another suggested feature is a dual-camera setup, providing some form of 4X optical zoom.

OnePlus 3T said to feature a Sony IMX398 sensor

OnePlus has always managed to stand out in its own way on the vast smartphone market. The growing startup puts great emphasis on value products and is famous for carefully and meticulously creating its handsets with a quality over quantity mindset. That being said, it is always exciting to hear about a new product in the works.
It will likely bear the A3010 model number, as made clear by a recent 3C certification, and the OnePlus 3T moniker. The title is quite fitting since this time around the OEM appears to have decided to stick with the same design and basic functionality and only upgrade the internals.
A new rumor now claims one of these upgrades will be a new Sony IMX398 sensor. It will likely power the improved 16MP snapper and probably accounts for some part of the $80 price hike. The Snapdragon 821 chipset is another notable improvement, although not a particularly major one, since it replaces the already capable Snapdragon 820.
According to rumors, however, there might be a trade off to the new 3T model. It will likely come with an LCD panel, instead of AMOLED. This is allegedly due to a current shortage, but on the plus side, Carl Pei has reaffirmed that the company will be sticking with Optic AMOLED for the foreseeable future.
The rest of the OnePlus 3T specs sheet appears to be unchanged and features 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 64GB or 128GB of on-board storage, a fingerprint reader on the front and 8MP selfie camera. In the connectivity department, there is 4G LTE, USB Type-C and everything is powered by a 3000 mAh battery with Dash Charge support. The handset will likely boot Android 7 Nougat and should be launching soon.

كاميرا الهاتف OnePlus 3T ستضم المستشعر Sony IMX398

Galaxy S8 to feature "slick design and an improved camera," Samsung says

Samsung has said that its upcoming Galaxy S series flagship smartphone will have a "slick design and an improved camera." The comment was made by none other than the South Korean company's mobile-communications vice president.

Mr Lee further revealed that the device will also feature an enhanced artificial-intelligence service, although he didn't confirm whether or not technology from Viv labs, a startup launched by Siri creators which Samsung recently agreed to acquire, will be there in the handset.
The Galaxy S8, in case you aren't aware, has already been the subject of several rumors, with the latest one saying that it'll feature an optical fingerprint sensor.

Samsung lunches Galaxy Note 7 in China with only 4GB of RAM

Today Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note7 in China, at a special event. Despite many past rumors claiming we'll see a version with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage in China, this was not mentioned at all in the official presentation. So the Note7 makes its debut in China with 'just' 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, the same values it sports in every other market.
The Chinese model is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset, just like the USA-bound Note7, interestingly (and not Samsung's Exynos solution used everywhere else throughout the world).

As you'd expect, all the other specs are shared with the other Note7 models that have gotten official in other countries so far. As for pricing, the flagship phablet will cost CNY 5,988 in China, which is about $897 or €799 at the current exchange rates.
The phone is currently in the registration-gathering phase, and it's already nabbed a million of those in less than two hours (however, don't forget registrations are not pre-orders). It will become available in China on September 1.

T-Mobile has posted a list of Samsung and HTC models that will get an Android 7.0 update

Now that Android 7.0 Nougat is officially out, the thing on most enthusiastic user's minds is whether their handset will be enjoying this iteration of Google's mobile OS and if so, when. Sadly, there is never a simple answer to this question, especially when you take into account all the regional and carrier versions of a given phone and their respective support life cycle.

Today, T-Mobile published a list of its own carrier version Samsung devices that will be getting the OTA at some point. It is preliminary and more entries could be added in the future, but currently it includes the following handsets:
  • Samsung Galaxy S6
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 edge
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+
  • Samsung Galaxy S7
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 edge
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 5
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 7
Frankly, this fits perfectly with Samsung's track record of typically supporting its flagship models through two major updates or roughly two years. Of course, there have been exceptions in the past and as we already mentioned, the list can be updated in the future. However, owners of said smartphones from T-Mobile can already rest assured that they will be enjoying Nougat in the future. As for timing, well, that is a whole different story.
Given that we haven't heard anything about ongoing testing or any other related leaks, it might be two to three months still, before builds start seeding. Unfortunately, that is simply the way the mobile support chain currently operates, especially for Samsung devices with their heavily-modified Android builds.

Last, but not least, it is also worth mentioning that T-Mobile has the HTC One M9 and HTC 10 on its official waiting list for Nougat as well. They are likely in the same boat time-wise as their Samsung siblings.

Samsung details the upgrades the Galaxy Note7 brings in an infographic

There are certainly those that will say that the brand new Galaxy Note7 isn't much of an upgrade over the outgoing Note5 and to counter those naysayers from day one Samsung has released an infographic detailing the differences between the two.
Conveniently, the key improvements have been highlighted in (non-coral) blue, and the list starts with the dual-edged display of the just-introduced model. Perhaps Samsung could have pointed out the Cat.9 LTE over the Note5's Cat.6 (450Mbps vs 300Mbps downlink), but hey, they have marketing teams to decide on that.
Of course, the IP68 certification for protection against the elements gets its dedicated section, and rightfully so. The list of highlights goes on with the Dual Pixel primary camera, microSD slot and USB Type-C port for wired connectivity. The Iris Scanner is duly mentioned too. You won't find an IR emitter though, not in the phone and not in the infographic.

Android 7.0 Nougat could be release as soon as next month

If you have been keeping track of Google's work on the next major Android update, then you have surely noticed that the search giant is definitely pushing thing along a lot faster this time around. Instead of waiting for Google I/O 2016, the first developer preview builds of the OS came out on March 9, two moths or so earlier than expected. It was only after a quite popular crows-sourced naming campaign that Android 7.0 received its official Nougat desert title and that was held off quite a bit until July 1.

So it would appear Google is definitely on a new schedule this time around and the main goal seems to be to get the OS into developer's hands as soon as possible all the while perfecting and adding features on the go and dealing with PR. Now that the fifth and final Preview buildis out everybody is anxiously anticipating the official release. It only makes sense to keep to momentum going and a new report by Evan Blass (@evleaks) claims Google will do just that and stick to the initially promised time frame and deliver its build by the end of September.
Android 7.0 releases next month, with the 8/5 security patch. Sorry Nexus 5 owners, no Nougat for you 😢
This is definitely great news and also fits nicely with some third-party update schedules that we have been hearing about, as well as a reoccurring rumor that the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will come out running Android Nougat on September 2. Naturally, however, Nexus users will be first in line for the new desert update and according to Evan Blass, Google intends to offer official support for every device that came out after the Nexus 5. That is bad news for owners of the three year old handset, but we can't really blame Google for moving on, plus the modding community is sure to hook it up with ROMs in no time.
As already mentioned, Android Nougat is still in active development and historically features from preview builds don't always make it in full and to the very last one in a final release. That being said, besides the Name and the somewhat odd cat-catching Easter egg game, we can't really provide a list of new features with any certainty. However, there are quite a few potential candidates to be excited about.

For instance, Nexus 6P beta testers got to play around with something called Sustained Performance Mode (SPM), which should allow app developers to inform the system of the resources a certain task will take up, as well as its duration and have Android manage to load better and save some battery in the process. Also, there have been signs of a new seamless OS update feature, effectively using a second partition for the process and then simply switching over to it once its done without the long wait. Also better multi-language support is anticipated and so are a few other less-popular changes, like the removal of the Dark Theme and Desktop shortcuts.

Samsung Galaxy On5 (2016) passes through FCC

The SM-G5700, which was spotted on Zauba late last month and is alleged to be the 2016 iteration of Samsung's Galaxy On5 (SM-G550) smartphone from last year, has been certified by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), suggesting that it could be launched sooner than later.
For those who aren't aware, the device has already been spotted on benchmarking website Geekbench, revealing some of its key specs, including Exynos 7570 chipset with quad-core 1.4GHz CPU, 2GB RAM, and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The Zuaba listing for the device revealed a 5-inch display.
