Survey showed 12 out of 24 Note7 owners switched to iPhone

Research firm IDC surveyed 1,082 U.S. customers of the Note7 through on online survey on October 17 and 18, just a few days after the phone maker decided to permanently discontinuethe productivity-focused phablet.
Of the 1,082 U.S. consumers, 507 were current Samsung owners, 347 were past Samsung users, 228 of which have never owned a Samsung device. Only 24 of the customers surveyed were owners, both past and present, of the Note7.
Key findings from the surveys show that half of the Note7 customers (12 out of 24) said they have or “will choose” an iPhone to replace their Samsung purchase. 17% of the surveyed customers said they would choose another Samsung. And most of them said they will return their phones physically to a carrier store.
The recall doesn’t appear to negatively affect Samsung’s brand, as most of the surveyed consumers said the recall wouldn’t affect future buying decisions for other non-smartphone appliances and products from Samsung.
“Although the recall may have an adverse impact on the brand in the short term, the truth is that Samsung remains the clear market leader in the worldwide smartphone market.” says Anthony Scarsella, research manager of mobile phones at IDC, “Moving forward, Samsung will need to put the Note7 to rest as quickly as possible to focus all efforts on producing a stellar Galaxy S8 come next spring.”

OnePlus 3T said to feature a Sony IMX398 sensor

OnePlus has always managed to stand out in its own way on the vast smartphone market. The growing startup puts great emphasis on value products and is famous for carefully and meticulously creating its handsets with a quality over quantity mindset. That being said, it is always exciting to hear about a new product in the works.
It will likely bear the A3010 model number, as made clear by a recent 3C certification, and the OnePlus 3T moniker. The title is quite fitting since this time around the OEM appears to have decided to stick with the same design and basic functionality and only upgrade the internals.
A new rumor now claims one of these upgrades will be a new Sony IMX398 sensor. It will likely power the improved 16MP snapper and probably accounts for some part of the $80 price hike. The Snapdragon 821 chipset is another notable improvement, although not a particularly major one, since it replaces the already capable Snapdragon 820.
According to rumors, however, there might be a trade off to the new 3T model. It will likely come with an LCD panel, instead of AMOLED. This is allegedly due to a current shortage, but on the plus side, Carl Pei has reaffirmed that the company will be sticking with Optic AMOLED for the foreseeable future.
The rest of the OnePlus 3T specs sheet appears to be unchanged and features 6GB of LPDDR4 RAM, 64GB or 128GB of on-board storage, a fingerprint reader on the front and 8MP selfie camera. In the connectivity department, there is 4G LTE, USB Type-C and everything is powered by a 3000 mAh battery with Dash Charge support. The handset will likely boot Android 7 Nougat and should be launching soon.

كاميرا الهاتف OnePlus 3T ستضم المستشعر Sony IMX398

vivo X7 has faster fingerprint sensor, launches apps quicker than Galaxy S7 edge, iPhone 6s Plus

By now you may already have heard about the vivo X7, since the Chinese smartphone has been in the news a lot lately, either through various rumors and leaks, or even some official teasers. It's going to finally become official at an event on June 30, possibly alongside the bigger vivo X7 Plus.
Some of its specs have already been confirmed by the company, one teaser at a time. Thus expect the X7 to feature the Snapdragon 652 chipset and 4GB of RAM, along with 64GB of storage and a 16 MP front-facing camera. Like all recent phones that aren't low-end, it will also tout a fingerprint scanner under its screen.

And this is half of the focus of the leaked promo video you can see above. The X7's fingerprint scanner is put to the test, speed-of-unlocking-wise, against the iPhone 6s Plus and Galaxy S7 edge, which vivo seems to imply will be its handset's main competitors. Spoiler alert - the vivo X7 turns out to be faster than both of those when it comes to unlocking using your fingerprint.
But that's not all. An app load test (the type you usually see in YouTube videos - load one app, go to the home screen, then load another, and so on) also renders the vivo X7 the winner in yet another ad-hoc competition with the iPhone 6s Plus and the Galaxy S7 edge.
OK, vivo, we get it. The point here is that the X7 will be one fast smartphone, despite not using Qualcomm's highest-end chipset (the Snapdragon 820). Too bad you probably won't (officially) see the X7 outside of China and maybe a handful of other Asian markets.

New Sprint HTC 10 update brings June security patch, camera improvements

Sprint has started rolling out a new update to HTC 10 units on its network. According to the change-log shared by the carrier on its official website, the update brings camera improvements as well as some regular bug fixes.

While the change-log doesn't say anything about it, users who've received the update - which comes as version 1.80.651.1 - say that the Android security patch for the month June is also included.
Another thing worth mentioning here is that the update started rolling out on June 21, and according to Sprint, the roll-out will complete within 24 hours. This means that it won't be long before the update notification will pop up on your device, if it hasn't already.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 said to only be available with a curved screen

New reports suggest that Samsung may not even bother with a flat-screened Note this year, contrary to early reports of Samsung testing two different models for the Note5’s successor, The Korea Herald reports, “Samsung is not considering launching a flat screen version of the Note phone.” This is according to Munwha Ilbo, a local daily Newspaper in Korea.
The Samsung Note 4, Galaxy S6, and Galaxy S7 have all seen edge variants of the standard model. Starting off with the Note 4, Samsung released an oddball called the Note Edge. When I worked at Samsung at the retail level, I had to answer this question so many times “what does it do differently?” My answer always ended with “…well, and it looks pretty damn cool”.
The next year when the S6 edge launched alongside the Galaxy S6, Samsung drastically underestimated how many edge devices would sell and couldn’t keep up with the demand. Samsung is clever to gradually introduce such a form factor into the market and Samsung has already launched 4 edge devices: Note edge, S6 edge, S6 edge+, and of course the Galaxy S7 edge.
If Samsung solely released a curved Note smartphone, would you care that there wasn’t a flat-screened version of it?

Rumor says Galaxy S8 will feature dual-camera setup, UHD display

A new rumor out of China is claiming that the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S7 will come with a dual-camera setup, adding that the said camera module is likely to be a home grown one, engineered by SEMCO.
The rumor also says that the handset will sport a UHD display, presumably to deliver better VR experience. Both dual-camera setup and ultra high definition display would make the Galaxy S8 the first Samsung smartphone of its kind.
It's worth mentioning that were rumors that the next iPhone will also feature a dual-camera setup, but subsequent reports have suggested otherwise.

Apple iOS 10 may finally allow the long awaited dark mode

The Dark Mode is not a new concept for the iOS. The rumors about a dark theme has been around for quite some time, but maybe it is finally coming for real with iOS 10.
Numerous references have found in the iOS 10 code and its developer kits. In fact system apps such as Safari, iTunes, Messages, iBooks, and Clock can be natively run in dark mode. This isn't available as an option on the iOS 10, but it's still fully supported by the platform.

Apple didn't mention anything about a dark mode in its keynote or the upcoming days at the WWDC. There is a good chance Apple is readying the dark mode for a point release, just like the Night Shift mode came with the iOS 9.3.
Anyway, with all those proofs for the Dark Mode we are sure it won't be long before it becomes a part of iOS.

New Galaxy Note7 teaser reconfirms curved display, reveals ability to write on it

We've already had reports and leaks revealing that the next Galaxy Note will be Note7, and it will feature a curved display (dual-edge screen to be precise). Now, a new teaser alleged to be of the device has surfaced online confirming once again the Note7 moniker as well as edged display.
The teaser says, "Write on the edge of something great." This, coupled with the position of the stylus in the image, possibly indicates that the new Note will allow users to write on the edged display. Adding weight to this possibility is the fact that the company recently patented a similar feature.
There's currently no way to verify the authenticity of the teaser image, so - needless to say - take it with a pinch of salt.

BlackBerry Priv down to $375 in US

BlackBerry's debut Android smartphone - the Priv - is now available for just $375 in the US, where retailer Newegg is currently selling the device at that price. This compares to the $395 price tag the phone carries on Amazon.
Officially, the Priv is still being sold for $649 by BlackBerry, although - if you aren't already aware - that's $50 less than the handset's launch price.
The latest price cut comes amid reports suggesting that the phone has received a big thumbs down from customers. Not only this, T-Mobile recently confirmed that it has stopped selling the device online.

Samsung beta tests new UI in China and Korea

Samsung is testing a new UI in China and Korea as part of the Galaxy Beta Program. The test is being done on the Galaxy Note5 and called 'New Note UX'.

One of the big changes is the lack of app drawer in the launcher. This is a common trend among Chinese OEMs so it's likely Samsung is trying this out to see how it works in East Asian markets. The app icons are shaped uniformly, even for third party apps, which means it is cropping them, another trend among Chinese OEMs trying hard to emulate iOS. It remains to be seen if either of these things will be optional or forced upon users.
There are some other changes too, most noteworthy one being the Settings app, which again looks a lot like something you'd find on a Chinese smartphone. Also, Samsung seems to be moving back from having text for buttons to just iconography.
The source says the UI changes will be coming to all flagship Samsung devices in future and not just limited to the Note5 or the upcoming Note device. This is in beta still, so some things could change.

Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition South Korea launch set for June 13

If you are in South Korea, and are waiting for Samsung's Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition smartphone, you'll be glad to know that the device will go on sale in the country starting June 13, or coming Monday.
What's worth mentioning is that only 1,000 units will be on offer, and you'll only be able to purchase the handset through Samsung's online store. As for the price, the phone will carry a tag of KRW 1.199 million, which translates into around $1025 at current exchange rates.
The first 30 buyers will also get a Batman Injustice version figure along with the package, which includes Gear VR, Batman emblem badge as well as suit case, credits from Injustice, and Oculus VR contents voucher.
In case you missed, the Russian pricing for the Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition is already out, and the phone is also up for pre-orders in Indonesia.

OnePlus 3 first shipment of 7200 units enters India, declared unit value is $340

The first shipment of OnePlus 3 final units for commercial sale has entered India. The batch totals 7200 pieces at a unit value of INR 22,858 ($341), the Zauba import listing reveals.

Now that's obviously not the final retail price, but speculation revolves around INR 25,000 ($370). Even so, the number is still significantly less than the CNY 2,999 ($460) price of theinitial 1,000 units sold in China prior to official launch.

If the final price in China is anything close to what the Indian customs data states, those 1,000 people will then be refunded the difference. 'Why the entire ordeal?' is a question only the marketing people can answer.
Anyway, the official announcement of the OnePlus 3 will take place on June 15, which is when all price speculations will be put to an end.

Moto Z and Moto Z Force announced with SD820, 5.5-inch QHD AMOLED displays

The rumors were true, as it turns out. Today Lenovo has unveiled not one but two new Moto Z smartphones - the Moto Z and Moto Z Force. These are basically two versions of the same flagship smartphone, where the former is thinner and the latter has a bigger battery and a ShatterShield screen that the company guarantees won't break when you drop it.
The Moto Z (seen below) is 5.2mm thin, and it's made from "aircraft-grade aluminum and stainless steel". It has a 5.5-inch QHD AMOLED touchscreen, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 SoC, 4GB of RAM, and 32 or 64GB of expandable storage. The rear camera is a 13 MP unit with laser autofocus, OIS and dual-tone LED flash, while the selfie shooter is a 5 MP affair with a wide-angle lens.

The handset has a fingerprint scanner, and a water-repellant coating. It's kept running by a 2,600 mAh battery which can charge very quickly - up to 8 hours of use delivered with just 15 minutes of charging. The connector is USB Type-C. The Moto Z runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

The Moto Z Force (pictured above) is thicker at 6.99mm, but that means it can pack a bigger, 3,500 mAh battery, a higher-res camera, and a shatter-proof display. It's got a 21 MP shooter with f/1.8 aperture on the back with phase detection autofocus, while keeping the laser autofocus and OIS features from the Z. Otherwise, the two phones are identical, including the fact that neither has a 3.5mm headset jack. Motorola will include a USB Type-C to 3.5mm adapter in the box, though.
The main selling point of both Moto Z devices is their support for the new MotoMods. These are modular accessories that simply snap onto the phones' backs thanks to some powerful magnets. They connect using those 16 "magical" dots you can see on the lower part of the rear of the Z and Z Force.
In the US, you'll find the Moto Z Droid Edition and the Moto Z Force Droid Edition at Verizon starting "this summer". Motorola will also sell an unlocked version of the Z directly to consumers. In other countries, the Moto Z will become available starting in September. The Z Force will be exclusive to Verizon, at least in the beginning.

Google to offer developers a better subscription revenue split

Earlier today, Apple sort of jumped the gun on its own WWDC event and announced a few rather important changes coming to the App Store and developers. Among these was a new 85/15 revenue split for subscription services, which will replace the current arrangement of 70% for the developer and 30% for Apple.
Google was quick to respond and revealed that it is planning to implement the very same split within the Play Store as well. And in an attempt to silence the "copycat" debates that are sure to commence in the comments, we will mention that the search giant claims the feature has been in testing for quite some time now. This was done mostly to experiment with a new incentive to implement Google Cast support in more third-party content providers. So, we can't really be sure who followed whom on this one, but the important thing is, developers for both platforms will be getting a bigger share of the subscription pie.
There are a couple of important differences to note here. Apple has clarified that it will only offer the bigger percentage cut for subscriptions that exceed a year. This means that developers will be benefiting more only from their long-term subscribers, which, in turn, could theoretically lead to better deals and benefits for loyal users.
Google, on the other hand, has promised to implement the new 85/15 split for all subscription services soon. This definitely falls in line with Google's more relaxed approach to annual payment models as a whole, as the Play Store does already allow developers to skip the platform's payment services entirely and keep all the profits with other payment solutions - something that Apple does not offer.

OnePlus teases the OnePlus 3 with four camera samples !!

OnePlus 3, the next flagship killer, should be going official any moment now. OnePlus is publishing various teasers and gives us minor details with each day. We already know it will be available for purchase at pop-up events in select cities worldwide. We've even seen it pose for the camera in the wild.
The OnePlus 3 specs became public thanks to the GFXBench's database - it should pack a 5.5" 1080p AMOLED screen, run on the Snapdragon 820 chip with 6GB of RAM, and feature a 16MP main snapper.
Today OnePlus is teasing the OnePlus 3 camera capabilities via its official Twitter account. You can see four camera samples, which look very nice. Those have been downsampled to 2.4MP, though, so we can't judge the camera quality objectively just yet.
Here are the samples.
The OnePlus 3 should go official on June 14 and cost CNY 2,999. Until then brace yourselves for a plethora of various teasers from OnePlus.
